I went on a blog search.

Not just on TakingITGlobal, but everywhere else. MySpace, Diggit, and anywhere else that popped up when I put 'blog' into the search engine. I searched for the most popular ones. This is what I found.

The most popular blogs were the ones who had a pet hate/many pet hates. They could expand on these hates almost endlessly, they could reference them, create metaphors AND similies out of them, make stories of huge length and even get human AND animal examples of these hates. Sometimes these pet hates would consist of people (George Bush popped up quite a bit), or things (I particularly liked one that focused on grammar), sometimes it was behavior ('Why Men Are Stupid', 'How To Be The Worst Girlfriend') , but in general, the most popular blogs all talked about something they hated.

Then I wondered 'why?'.

Then I realised 'why?'. People read blogs about hated things because a)they agree and don't have the courage to speak out themselves and this is like a secret release for them, b)they enjoy getting worked up about this imbecile that thinks they know everything when really they're just opinionated gits that are only doing this for attention, c)they're actually interested in what other people in the world think and even thought these might be a bit of an extreme example there must be some truth in there and d)they think that they're funny.

I must admit, I'm in d). There's something about someone trying to enforce upon you the strength of their opinion by using references to Star Wars and the Killers. Unfortunetly my research is incomplete because I can't read any other language except English, so maybe in French, the references are to other things, like Moulin Rouge - the cartoon.

However, blogs are still a good way to get your voice heard, just it seems the most effective way to do it is to bring in the stuff you hate. Maybe its bad drivers, or the way people smile at you on the street. Anyway you do it, the longer you can go on about you're hate the better.
